A Private Detective, a Family Mystery, and a World Premiere: “DARLIN’” Opens This Week at Bridge Street Theatre
Inspired by playwright Michelle Carter's own family history, the new play begins previews Thursday, November 5, and officially opens Friday, November 6.
CATSKILL, NY — About a decade ago, award-winning playwright Michelle Carter won an unusual prize at a theatre benefit: the services of a private detective.
Carter asked the investigator, a former actor, to explore a mystery surrounding her grandmother's life. Although he uncovered little of what she had originally hoped to learn, his discoveries raised unexpected questions. A chance encounter with someone who knew something of her mother's past provided additional clues.
Those unanswered questions eventually helped inspire “DARLIN’,” Carter's autobiographically inspired new play, receiving its world premiere at Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill, November 5–15, 2026.
"I think the mysteries surrounding my mother's terrible childhood have always haunted me," Carter shared in a recent interview. "She went to great lengths to cloak those mysteries, and when she was alive I wanted to respect her privacy. But there was a kind of pain she carried through her life that I was very attuned to, a pain I wanted to know and understand."
In “DARLIN’,” Kate, a college lecturer who has just lost the job that defined her life for nearly three decades, faces an uncertain future and the declining health of her fiercely difficult mother, Liza. With the help of an unconventional caregiver, Kate journeys into her mother's past, arriving in 1958 San Francisco, where a teenage Liza is about to reunite with the mother who abandoned her.
Moving between the present and 1958, “DARLIN’” blends sharp humor, theatrical invention, and moments of painful recognition as three generations of women confront the stories that have shaped their lives.
The play's journey to the stage has been a collaborative one. Bridge Street Theatre hosted a developmental workshop and public reading of “DARLIN’” in March 2026, giving Carter the opportunity to hear the work performed and reconsider its structure, characters, and dramatic relationships.
"The reading of the first draft of this script at Bridge Street last March was revelatory for me," Carter says. "So much became obvious."
During the reading, actor Phil Mansfield gently questioned the motivations of Clyde, the country-western singer he portrays. Carter remembers her response with characteristic candor: "I stammered incoherently." It was one of several discoveries that sent her back to the fundamentals of playwriting: what characters want, what they do to get it, and what is at stake.
That process of discovery has continued through the play's development and into the current production. Carter credits director Katy Early and actors Barbara Pitts and Amanda Duarte with helping deepen the characters and shape the play through their questions and insights.
“DARLIN’” is directed by Katy Early and features Barbara Pitts, Amanda Duarte, and Phil Mansfield. The creative and production team includes scenic design by Joyce Lai, lighting design by Jo Averill-Snell, costume design by Michelle Rogers, sound design by Evdoxia Ragkou, stage management by Stacey Dobos and Timothy Dunn.
A two-time recipient of the PEN USA Award in Drama and an NEA Literature Fellowship recipient, Carter has previously seen her plays “How to Pray” and “Better” produced at Bridge Street Theatre. “DARLIN’” continues that artistic relationship with a world premiere developed in part on the Catskill stage.
